Motorcycle season is here! Canada is filled with some of the most picturesque rides in the world with countless lakes, provincial parks, coastlines and mountains.

Motorcycle enthusiasts are drawn by the freedom, the hum of the road, the wind hugging their sides and the fresh air. It’s one of the rare things in life that gives you a sense of peace and wonder every time you ride.

Tune-up your wheels and review your insurance coverage so you can sit back and enjoy the ride. Here are a few simple tune-up tips you can do to get your motorcycle ready for the riding season. (Note: before you begin any maintenance on your motorcycle, refer to the regular maintenance schedules in your owner’s manual.)

Tires
• Check the air pressure of your tires and inflate to the pressure specified in your owner’s manual.
• Inspect for wear and tear on the treads such as bulges, cracks, and embedded objects as this may indicate stress on the tire, which may need to be repaired or replaced.

Wheels
• Inspect your wheels for roundness, cracks and dents.
• Replace any bent, broken or missing spokes.

Oil and fluids
• Check the levels and quality of engine oil, hypoid gear oil, shaft drive, coolant, hydraulic fluid and fuel.
• Inspect for any areas where fluid may be leaking.

Controls
• Inspect levers to ensure they are still lubricated and fitted properly.
• Inspect cables to make sure they are not frayed, kinked or folded.
• Inspect hoses for cracks, leaks, cuts or deterioration.
• Test that the throttle moves freely and does not stick and snaps closed when released.

Lights
• Install your battery if you removed it over the winter – consult your owner’s manual for instructions.
• Make sure the terminals are clean, tight, properly charged and secured.
• Inspect reflectors, headlamp, tail lamp, brake lights, high and low beams, and turn signals to ensure they are not cracked and are in working order.

Chassis
• Inspect the condition of the frame, looking for cracks and dents.
• Ensure front and rear shocks are properly adjusted.
• Check the tension of the belt or chain and lubricate if needed.

Remember: always keep your motorcycle ownership and insurance on you when you ride. Ensure your sticker is up to date and renew it if your birthday has come and gone.
